Unnecessary Farce
Mason Street Warehouse Summer 2019 Theatre Season
Saugatuck, MI - On July 26, 2019, Mason Street Warehouse at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts presents the second production in its summer season, Unnecessary Farce. Unnecessary Farce is 90 minutes of over-the-top, laugh-till-you-cry entertainment with some of the most memorable characters you’ll ever meet. ABC-53 (Michigan) calls Unnecessary Farce, “A smash hit! The plot weaves you through mix-ups and mayhem you won’t believe. This is one funny show you don’t want to miss!”
In a cheap motel room, an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next door, two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape. But there’s some confusion as to who’s in which room, who’s being videotaped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired a hit-man, and why the accountant keeps taking off her clothes.
Think “Modern Family” meets “The Three Stooges” with plenty of clever dialogue and hilarious physical pranks. Running from July 26 - August 10, this critically acclaimed comedy is guest directed by David Alpert and features Mason Street Warehouse alumni Mary Robin Roth, Chris “Red” Blisset, and Amanda Ryan Paige. Roth was last seen in MSW’s “Cabaret”; Blisset and Paige were in last year’s productions of Once the Musical and Mamma Mia respectively.
But more than “alumni”, Blisset and Paige were married in Saugatuck 10 years ago -- in the lobby at the SCA -- and this year are celebrating their anniversary on the stage.
“We’re thrilled to bring this very talented cast to West Michigan,” said MSW Artistic Director Kurt Stamm. “It’s always fun to have alumni on the stage; Amanda, Chris and Mary Robin are fantastic comedic actors and they’re joined by three other really, really funny cast members. Director David Alpert is also an alumni, having directed our ‘17 production of “Fully Committed” and having been an intern when he was a student at Western Michigan University.”
Written by actor and playwright Paul Slade Smith, Unnecessary Farce premiered in Lansing, Michigan at Boars Head Theater in 2006 and has had more than 275 productions since then. "Actors have an edge when it comes to writing for actors. Actor/Playwright Paul Slade Smith certainly has the knack...he relies on character, rather than contrivance, to drive his increasingly frenzied, unrelentingly funny plot," said The Boston Globe.
